“Dancing like a crazy thing!”

posted by: Nathan Stevens 26th July 2009

After the first week of provocation, settling in to the lab and getting familiar with each other the Splendid artists were abruptly thrown into a large field (hence, the grass part...) along with 17,490 other young, happy, real people (including many 'normal-crazy people'), a whole heap of rock-stars and musical prodigies, and many, many balloons, largish Elves, drum kits, and other worldly items of a festive nature. This is truly Splendour in the Grass.

Splendour in the Grass has also been described, according to the official website, (which if you haven't checked out is a freshly designed masterpiece of user participation in itself), as such:

"The festival is on the top of most discerning Australian music fan's wish-lists of must-go Festivals, which combined with the event's relatively small capacity compared to many of the summer festivals, results in feverish activity on the day tickets go on sale. This year's festival [was] the eighth Splendour In the Grass. The two-day event accommodates 17,500 people and has sold out in advance in each year of its existence, often within hours of going on sale - all tickets to last year's festival were snapped up in just "" hours, while the preceding three years events sold out in a little over a day."

Word on the street, is the Splendid artists apparently had a really splendid time. This has been verified by some photo documentation, courtesy of David Nielsen.

After catching up with some of the Splendid artists, post the Splendour, here's what they had to say about the festival.

Question:
Can you describe Splendour in the Grass (please use lots of adjectives...)?

Responses: Playful, energetic, large, loud, dirty, frustrating, fun... A festy, fantastical music wonderland! ~ KA

Well's it was an alternative perspective for me than your regular festival foray. With an objective-arts-hat continually jumping on and off - I found myself thinking about the possibilities for next year's festival alot. This alternative experience also extended to - backstage experiences - beyond the mud and sweat of the mosh. But when it came to seeing bands - the only place to really be is out the front in the centre! Lapping it up! Dancing like a crazy thing! ~ LTS

It was an assault on the senses; confetti in the eye, beer in the throat, dust up the nose, extravaganza! ~ CS

Beautiful purple kaftan of destiny, Jostling, messy, noisy, rowdy, waiting, anticipating, mesmorising, communing, love beads, flowers, big big big big big big big......... ~ AF
