Friday: To the Shore!

We spend the day at The Linnaeus Estate a beautiful community between Byron Bay and Lennox Heads. Linnaeus has supported the Splendid program and in particular the development of Dom and Lauren’s work ‘Best Time Ever’ which was presented at the Festival this year. Today is a feasibility workshop for the Lab participants. It starts with a talk by provocateur Jamie Perrow. He discusses how important it is to manage the interplay between creativity and feasibility. He talks through risk management, budgeting, planning, logistics, working with stakeholders, OH&S and the ins and outs of installation and suppliers.
After a lunch and a swim, Marisa Snow talks logistics and production aka ‘how to produce your project for Splendid'. Marisa was Production Manager for this year’s Splendid Arts Program at the Festival and also works as Creative Producer at NORPA, one of the Splendid Partners. Marisa talks about how being a part of Splendid is a great opportunity to learn how to produce your artwork in a supportive environment with a festival audience, a crew, producing support and a budget. That said, she talks through the artists’ responsibility to deliver the feasibility elements which Jamie mentioned giving examples from projects this year. It’s important to think of everything, from how to secure an agreement and work with contractors, to the importance of having the right team with the right skills on board to deliver your project. Art isn't just about a good idea. Without the right people, know-how and decision making along the way, it will never get off a piece of paper!
The day winds up with drinks and a talk by Dom and Lauren about their artwork at Splendour this year. 'Best Time Ever' was a production heavy project, with Dom and Lauren spending lots of time with the welder from Woodford and developing a good relationship with their suppliers. It was a nice way to wrap up the day and the key messages from the workshops. And thanks to Linnaeus for having us.
