My first blog entry…
posted by: Lan Nguyen-hoan 09th August 2010I've never written a blog entry before so I'm not really sure what to say, or rather how to start. I guess that will do. So last Thursday I flew from Canberra to Brisbane to meet up with the rest of the Splendid peeps. This was extremely nerve-racking for me as I generally feel quite awkward in social situations with people who are new to me. The first night of the two-week Splendid adventure was no exception, I felt super awkward, anxious and self-concious. Fortunately these feelings dissipated over the following intense three days of the Splendour in the Grass festival. Being thrown into crazy rock festival conditions is one hell of a way to get to know people. Oh, and so is camping with some one who is effectively a stranger. Shout out to Rose, my Splendour room.
So we've been at the Splendid Arts Lab (post festival) for a week now, and I'm exhausted. It's been an amazing experience and I'm really enjoying spending time and talking with all the other Splendids - artists, provocateurs and organisy/producey types. In some ways I would say that the Lab has been a more intense experience than the Splendour in the Grass festival itself. 'Rigorous' has been a word that's been thrown around a lot, and I would also say that it has been challenging yet rewarding.
At the beginning of last week after we got back from the festival, we pretty much went straight into two days of site analysis with a Pecha Kucha night wedged in the middle. Pecha Kucha turned out suprisingly well - again I was super anxious but managed to get through it and I was really really impressed by everyone else's presentation.
On Thursday (5th of Aug) we participated in what's called a 'Charrette'. It's a really intensive 8-hour session that focuses on the generation of ideas. I'm not sure how clear that description is but i've re-written that line a few times already so that's all you're getting.
Friday was a feasibility workshop day at a beautiful sea-side place called Linaeus. Some of us exchanged ideas on an informal level and we all enjoyed the sun and sea air. Saturday was more discussion on ideas and a sad goodbye to Kelli and Lynda :(
Sunday was a much needed rest day and now it's monday again....
